1) Create awareness of issues relating to Darfur amongst teachers
2) Identify strategies for collective teacher actions
3) Make teachers advocates for Darfur
Who are Teachers for Darfur?
We are a group of teachers who are growing increasingly concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian siutation in Darfur in Sudan. An estimated 200,000 people have been killed and millions displaced, people who are now dependent for survival on international aid in camps.
As teachers who teach our students about the Holocaust and genocide we find it impossible to remain silent. The world said never again in 1945 and said the same after the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Yet the world once again appears to stand by as acts that have been described as 'ethnic cleansing' and 'genocidal violence' (Aegis Trust) continue to be perpetrated in Darfur.
If we chose not to do anything History will not forgive us.
